AMOPA, is a society made up of 43 Fruit and Vegetable Producer Associations (FVPA), producing and distributing fruit, vegetables, citrus fruits and dried fruits, amongst others. Food Safety and environmental quality standards such as ISO 9001, BRC, IFS, ISO 14000, GLOBALGAP, and Nature’s Choice are mandatory for members.
The target market for member firms is the EU, especially Germany, the Netherlands, France and England, with efforts being made to reach new eastern countries.
The sales value of AMOPA companies grew more than €474 million in the last year.
The combined figures of the 43 FVPA’s are impressive, employing 11,081 farmers, over 61,675 hectares of land and a production of 734,045 tons.
One of the requirements of AMOPA fruit and vegetable firms is to farm according to environmental regulations whilst minimizing the use of phytosanitary products and the generation of waste. Aside from meeting AMOPA regulations, they must meet the quality standards of target markets which are more demanding regarding the use of phytosanitary products and environmentally safe practices.
Pepper production for example, is carried out using biological plague controls by six AMOPA entities, producing 60,000 tons from 600 hectares of land.
Other FVPA’s produce ecological vegetables such as broccoli, celery, pepper and melon over 700 hectares.
